Not your ordinary Doughnut

For weeks, I’ve been dying to try Sonja’s Doughnuts. It’s always looked so fluffy, and who does not like fluff?! Anyway, I finally found myself in their Serendra branch today. I was (pleasantly) surprised to find a wide variety of not only sweet flavors (Vanilla Bean, Strawberry Cheesecake, Creme Brûlée and Chocolate), but also savory ones. I mean where else can you find Olive Oil & Basil, Toasted Rice, Cacio é Pepe (cheese and pepper) and Truffle (yes, the black mushroom) doughnuts.

These are the Cacio é Pepe and the Truffle doughnuts. My verdict: Both met my fluffiness expectation and both were generously stuffed with the creamy filling which I frankly think is sort of an acquired taste.  The Cacio was fine, because it was predominantly cheese, I wouldn’t have minded more pepper (I think).  The truffle was a different story.  While I normally LOVE truffle, I still have to get used to the creamy-sweet version of it.

I would still go back to Sonja’s for their doughnuts, but I think next time I would stick to the usual sweet flavors.  Has anyone tried the other flavors?  What are your thoughts?img_1271
